As Fall Arrives Pool Owners Should Properly Close and Prepare Their Outdoor Pool for the Colder Months.

Here’s a guide on what to consider:

1. Balance the Water Chemistry

  • pH Level: Ensure the pH level is between 7.2 and 7.6.
  • Alkalinity: Maintain a level between 80-120 ppm.
  • Calcium Hardness: Ensure levels are between 200-400 ppm.
  • Chlorine: Shock the pool with a chlorine-based shock to kill any lingering bacteria or algae.

2. Clean the Pool Thoroughly

  • Debris Removal: Skim leaves, insects, and other debris from the surface.
  • Vacuuming: Vacuum the bottom to remove dirt and debris.
  • Brush Walls and Floor: Brush the pool walls and floor to prevent algae buildup.

3. Lower the Water Level

  • Reduce Water Level: Lower the water level below the skimmer and jets, typically 4-6 inches. This prevents water from freezing in these components.

4. Drain and Clean the Equipment

  • Pump and Filter: Drain water from the pump, filter, heater, and other equipment. Clean the filter to remove any accumulated dirt.
  • Plumbing Lines: Blow out the plumbing lines to remove any water that could freeze and cause damage.

5. Add Winterizing Chemicals

  • Algaecide: Add a winter algaecide to prevent algae growth during the off-season.
  • Enzymes: Consider using pool enzymes to break down non-living organic material that might cause stains or scaling.
  • Pool Antifreeze: Use pool antifreeze in the plumbing lines to protect them from freezing.

6. Install a Pool Cover

  • Cover Type: Use a solid or mesh pool cover that fits securely over the pool. Solid covers are better at preventing debris and light from entering, while mesh covers allow water to drain but require a more thorough cleaning in the spring.
  • Safety Covers: If you have pets or children, a safety cover is essential to prevent accidents.

7. Check the Pool Area

  • Trim Surrounding Trees: Trim any overhanging branches that could drop leaves or debris into the pool.
  • Store Accessories: Store pool accessories like ladders, diving boards, and floats in a dry, protected area.

8. Consider Professional Help

  • If you’re unsure about the process or have a complex pool system, consider hiring a professional pool service like Gunite Pools of Westchester to close your pool properly.

9. Regular Monitoring

  • Throughout the fall and winter, periodically check the pool cover and area to ensure everything remains secure.

Taking these steps will help protect your pool from damage during the cold months and make reopening it in the spring much easier.
